One Shared Mission
Rooted in Quality & Sustainability
We’re dedicated to creating products that heal, rather than harm - and our partnership with Maui Nui Venison marks a major milestone in our mission. Together, we’ve crafted something truly unique: Kettle & Fire’s first-ever wild-harvested venison bone broth.
Our intentions to fix a broken food system led us to rethink sourcing and landed us on the island of Maui, where efforts are already being made to protect the health of people and the planet. We proudly offer this nourishing bone broth made from sustainably harvested Axis deer, who roam freely on the island, live and graze naturally and forage a diverse diet, enriching this bone broth with an unmatched set of micronutrients. The result? Our most nutritious bone broth, and a restoration of balance to an overburdened ecosystem.
The Environmental Impact of Axis Deer
The Environmental Impact
of Axis Deer
Axis deer have become an invasive species on Maui, rapidly overpopulating since their introduction, putting immense pressure on the island’s delicate ecosystem. With no natural predators, these deer have overgrazed native vegetation, disrupted soil integrity, affected watershed and retention, and have changed the natural habitat for native wildlife.
Due to their expansion, Axis deer populations have contributed to soil erosion, a loss of biodiversity and regeneration of native plant species, and a reduction in food sources for other animals… creating a ripple effect throughout the island.
The Nutritional Value of Axis Deer
Humanely hunting Axis deer on Maui serves a dual purpose: it provides a source of nutritious, lean meat for local communities while helping mitigate the environmental damage caused by the overpopulation. By managing the numbers in a sustainable and humane way, we are able to contribute to a reduction in overgrazing, allowing native plants to regenerate and restoring balance to the island. This not only prevents soil erosion and protects native flora but also supports the survival of other species that depend on these plants for food and shelter.
Not only that, but the bones sourced from Axis deer provide a nutrition profile like we’ve never offered before in a bone broth. Because these animals roam and graze wildly their entire lives - consuming a rich diet, as nature intended - we are able to source nutrient-rich bones that are distinct from any others.
“We want to show that it’s possible
to produce food in a way that nature intended.”
